When the air quality map for Surat is first opened, the entire page appears to carry a reddish-brown colour. This could reflect the overall air quality as displayed in the centre of the yellow-coloured disc which is shown to be just south of the city. It is unusual for such a large city to have only one monitoring station. We can see this station is operated by the Ambuja Cement Ltd. Company in Magdalla. When selecting this disc, a dedicated page will open showing that the current air quality is “Moderate” with a US AQI reading of 89. This is an internationally recognised system that is endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and is used when comparing air quality in different cities across the globe.
It can be seen that there were two main pollutants measured by this station, PM2.5 - 30.4 µg/m³ and PM10 - 58.1 µg/m³. These figures are quoted in microns per cubic metre.
The interactive map shows the location of the air monitoring stations and the position of any wildfires burning in the vicinity. Together this information is very useful because it can give a good indication as to whether or not the city will be affected by the ensuing smoke. It can be seen that there are several fires burning towards the east of Surat but the wind is blowing slightly to the north-east of the city so most of the smoke should be avoided. PM stands for Particulate Matter at PM10 level. Particulate matter is very small dust and gaseous particles. These particles cannot be seen with the normal eye. Particulate matter - 10 such particles are called, whose diameter is 10 micrometres. These types of particles include dust, gas, polluted microscopic particles.
